ATHLETE OF THE MONTH – JUNE 2022
CHARLIE NATHAN

Congratulations to Charlie Nathan for being selected as Red Dog’s Athlete of the Month for June 2022.

Charlie wins this month’s award for his performance at Ironman Cairns and qualifying for The Ironman World Championships in Kona. Well done!

A big thank you to our sponsors for donating this month’s prizes.

1.Red Dog AOTM, how do you feel about that?

Huge surprise! I thought Trent was chasing me up for fees when I received his email.

2. What attracted you to the club?

My wife started swimming at the Valley with Red Dog, she said it was fun and a good atmosphere and to come along…so I did as I was told!
She was right and I’m still here 7 years later.

3. How much training do you do at the moment?

I was floating around the 20 hour/week mark leading into Cairns Ironman. 3hrs swimming, 12hrs biking and 5hrs running.

4. What’s your favourite session and why?

Anything strength endurance, Friday swims are enjoyable. Nice way to end the work week. I find anything that gets my heart rate up too high I lose control of my stomach and it all gets a bit messy.

 5. Who’s your ideal training partner and why?

Coach Cath wants me to say her here, but Cath holds you accountable to the time cycle in the pool, some days that’s not ‘ideal’.
Probably my dog Bruce, I can’t talk when I run so he is the ‘ideal’ training partner!

6. Favourite motivational quote?

I love all that fluffy motivational quote stuff, too hard to pick a favourite so I’ll tell you my favourite joke instead….

Knock Knock

Who’s there?
Owen

Owen who?

Oh when the Saints….go marching in, Oh when the Saints go marching in…;)

7. The one bit of advice I’d give to a newbie is…

Enjoy the training. If you enjoy the training, you’ll be consistent. And when you’re consistent…..

Then when you get serious (in your second week) log your training and get on a program with a coach to review what you are doing, you’ll reach your goals much faster.

8. What’s your next event?

Kona – I’ve dreamt of racing there for many years. Can’t wait.

That will then lay a good foundation for an easy victory at the Raby Bay Rumble in December!

9. What do you do outside of training?

I’m a St Kilda supporter so between training and supporting them I don’t have any more emotional energy to do anything else. (my poor wife and children)

10. What’s your one guilty pleasure?

Oh god, my whole diet is a guilty pleasure. I’m shocking.
I work on the road so McDonalds gets good run for its reliable bathroom facilities. I never leave empty handed. A Large chocolate shake is the ultimate hungry thirsty!
