September Athlete of the Month 2010 - Amanda McIntosh
Reddog AOTM, how do you feel about that? At a time in my life when everything else was falling apart, the only thing that kept me going was the squad members, my training and my goals. I was very humbled to be given AOTM, for doing something that I love and makes me feel alive.
What attracted you to the sport of triathlon? I loved all the disciplines involved with triathlon and always wanted to compete, it was only a matter of time … it was very daunting going to swim squad training for the first time … if you can get past that everything else is a breeze
If you were Reddog coach for the week, what would you do differently? Probably a brick session thrown in during the week – circuit of long pocket and run off the bike 2-3 sets depending how quick you are. Loved your long Sunday Swim/Bike/Run that you did from Yeronga pool, would love to see more of those especially leading up to the major triathlons, would be happy to do those at Redcliffe or Gold Coast … really missing running on the track on Tuesday morning … Water running session, I’m not injured but definitely builds up the endurance
How much training do you do at the moment? I do what Trent tells me to do (most of the time) … about 9 (10 if you include my Bikram Yoga, not for the faint hearted)
Least favourite session and why? None really, but if you made me choose, Thursday swim squad – only because the pool is 25 meters
If you had one wish, what would it be? For my sister and her children to find peace and happiness and have a beautiful life
Favourite motivational quote?
There are only two options regarding commitment. You're either IN or you're OUT. There is no such thing as life in-between - Pat Riley
It ain't over 'til it's over - Yogi Berra
Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm - Ralph Waldo Emerson
Favourite coach quote? All the gear and no idea – I still have a lot to learn
What advice would you give to other Reddogs who would like to be AOTM? Have a goal and commit to it, show commitment to your training and you will see the results that you want. Be enthusiastic and enjoy your life … and all importantly listen to your coach!!!
What are your goals? To finish in the top 10 in my age category (baby steps); keep pushing myself to try new disciplines and make sure that I don’t take myself too seriously, enjoy my life and keep it balanced
Who would be your ideal training partner? I seriously need help with my bike skills (or lack thereof), I would love a bit of time with Lance Armstrong. Not only is he a great athlete but he is also committed to a greater cause.
