ATHLETE OF THE MONTH – MARCH 2016

 AOTM MatthewBoevink1

Congratulations to Matthew Boevink, AOTM for March 2016. Well done!!!

Matthew takes out this month's award for her positive attitude and commitment to training throughout February.

A big thank you to Shoes Feet Gear, Endura, GMN Vegie Prepi and All Hose and Valves for donating this month’s prizes.

1.           Red Dog AOTM, how do you feel about that?

It is not something I ever really expected, so it definitely is a surprise, but a very pleasant one.

2.           What attracted you to the club?

The sense of "team" that comes from a group of people who are obviously having fun.  It was evident whenever you see Red Dog at an event and comes across on the website from the Goondiwindi photographs..........and the dinner on a Wednesday evening after swimming - I tell myself I'm not going swimming training but going out to dinner.

3.           How much training do you do at the moment?

Strava tells me it ranges from 12-15hrs in a bigger week over eight sessions, up to 20hrs in a crazy week, but in taper and recovery week post Mooloolaba this has dropped to around 5-6hrs.

4.           Least favourite session and why?

Saturday morning cycle - I find getting up at 4.15am to meet at 5am a big challenge - call me soft I guess.  But once I am there it is a great ride so I keep coming back (excluding taper and recovery weeks).

5.           If you had one wish, what would it be?

On the basis this question has similar rules to the Genie (Robin Williams) in Aladdin where you can't wish for more wishes, I would ask to have the ability to compose music that can stir the soul -  Handel's Messiah, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony / Moonlight Sonata, Bach's Cantata #147 or the Beatles Yesterday.

6.           Favourite motivational quote?

"In God we trust, all others must bring data" - Edwards Deming.

7.           The one bit of advice I’d give to a newbie is…

Do Mt Coot-tha repeats... nothing improves your ability to time trial quicker and replicate a hard race effort

(now on the basis of a liberal interpretation of "one bit of advice per sport", I'd also say join a swim squad and incorporate a running session on the track at least once a fortnight)

8.           My next race is…

Port Macquire 70.3 - thanks Trent for suggesting I ask about a wait list.

9.           I couldn’t do what I do without…

The skills of the orthopedic surgeon's at Goethe University Hospital, Frankfurt.

10.       What do you do outside of triathlons?

Work for the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services as a strategic performance analyst - in order to pay for triathlons.

11.       What’s your one guilty pleasure?

Constructing a sentence, which, as frequently as possible, correctly utilises and promotes the beauty of the Oxford comma.

This photo is my last afternoon in East Timor on discovering we had a pool and thus had to swim in it.

Thanks Trent for the awesome experience that is Red Dog.
