April Athlete of the Month
Why did you get into triathlons?
I used to run and ride but nothing serious and thought that since I was two-thirds of the way to doing a triathlon I may as well try one. How many sessions a week do you train?
I usually do something every day even if it is just riding to work but there is usually one hard session per day – recovery is equally important as the other sessions.
Who would be your ideal training partner?
I think a training partner should be able to push you outside of your comfort zone – it’s only then that you see the benefits from all the time spent training.
Most enjoyable race and why?
Gold Coast Half Ironman 2008 – hot, windy day and my first attempt at that distance – for some reason I prefer the longer distances.
Triathlons you would like to do and why?
Hawaii Ironman – enough said.
Arctic Circle Marathon – although not a triathlon, you actually run out onto the Greenland ice cap
Advice you would give to someone starting out?
Talk to people, try different things and find out what works for you but above all have fun.
If you were the Reddog coach for a week what would you do differently?
My sets would be long and boring. I think Trent does a good job with the sessions
Favourite motivational quote?
Never really been one for words, I prefer to be motivated by actions
Advice you would give other Reddogs who would like to be AOTM?
Just be consistent at training. If you put in the effort and have a goal to aim for you will see improvements.
If you had one wish?
World peace? It may be OK to wish for something but harsh reality dictates that you have to make it happen.
