ATHLETE OF THE MONTH – APRIL 2023
LIZ SAVAGE

Congratulations to Liz Savage for being selected as Red Dog's Athlete of the Month for April 2023.

Liz wins this month's award for her positive attitude and commitment to training for Cairns Ironman while juggling regular work-related travel and her passion for sailing.

A big thank you to our sponsors for donating this month’s prizes.

1.Red Dog AOTM, how do you feel about that?

Very chuffed and grateful for the recognition. Thank you RDTT :-)

2. When did you join the club?

I joined swim squad about 8 years ago for general fitness. I had started running only a few years prior. Before I knew it, I was buying a bike and entering my first Triathlon Pink! Hanging around with Red Dogs does that to you...

3. How much training do you do at the moment?

At the moment, it feels like I’m doing little else! (see Q8 below). Between 1 to 2.5 hours each weekday, plus long bikes, runs and bike-runs at weekends. Always followed by coffee.

4. What’s your favourite session and why?

Swimming for sure. Having swum much of my life in packed, grubby indoor pools in the UK, lunch squad at the beautiful Valley Pool with sunshine and palm trees truly feels like paradise.

5. Who’s your ideal training partner and why?

My Garmin, LOL. I’m an engineer by training so I love data! Of the human kind? The peeps doing Cairns this year have been amazing. There’s such strong camaraderie in the training group on the journey together.

6. Favourite motivational quote?

“I will do today what others won’t, so I can do tomorrow what others can’t”. I remind myself of this when training gets tough.

7. The one bit of advice I’d give to a newbie is…

Enjoy the journey of learning a new skill. Don’t be in too much of a rush, take one step at a time. Oh…and always listen to the Coach?!

8. What’s your next event?

My first Ironman - Cairns, this June. I’ve got a ’big’ birthday this year, so needed a suitably BIG goal to take on...

 9. What do you do outside of training?

My work in the travel & tourism industry is pretty full on and I’m lucky to travel regularly. Otherwise, I can be typically be found in, on or below the water: sailboat racing, boating, SUP-ing & Scuba diving.

10. What’s your one guilty pleasure?

I know you’ve asked for one, but I can’t possibly decide between coffee and Pinot Noir.
