August Athlete of the Month 2010 - Scott Waters

Reddog AOTM, how do you feel about that?

Stoked! There are a lot of people in the squad who train really hard so it's nice to think I'm amongst them.

What attracted you to the sport of triathlon?

I got engaged so no longer needed the 'mirror muscles' from throwing weights around a gym room floor. I thought triathlons would be much more functional (though much more time consuming that I knew!)

If you were Reddog coach for the week, what would you do differently?

I would make Chris the swim coach at Yeronga for the week - 400m warm up, 800m main set and a 100m cool down sounds great (sure, we wouldn't be good swimmers but it would be a relaxing night!)

How much training do you do at the moment?

About 8 sessions a week give or take (depending on how cold it is in the morning)

Least favourite session and why?

An example of a session I didn't enjoy as much as the rest: middle of winter, 15 degrees, cloudy, raining, pool heater not turned on the night before or that day, diving into an ice bath of a pool for an hour set.

If you had one wish, what would it be?

To have a robot me that can do those sessions I just don't feel like doing, then somehow be able to transfer the physiological benefits into my body.

Favourite motivational quote?

No quote, but as lame as it is Lance Armstrong and his unwavering drive and confidence is motivational. Embarrassing secret: when I feel lazy and want to stay in bed, I ask myself "What would Lance do?" That usually works and gets me moving.

What advice would you give to other Reddogs who would like to be AOTM?

Keep setting goals. Know what it is you want to achieve and be specific. And if it stops being fun take a break. You only live once, right?

Some sound advice: cut your toenails before you race. If you've seen mine lately you'll know why.

Also, find a regional triathlon to do so the competition is slight-on and you can snag a victory.

What are your goals?

I've got a couple - to knock off Noosa in under 2:10, to finish Busso Ironman in December, and to steal Bretto's (sorry Bretto!) compete in the World Long Course Champs next November in Las Vegas (celebrated post-race with a Harley ride across the US). Support crew welcome!

Who would be your ideal training partner?

I would love the chance to train with Craig Alexander for a week, if only to pick his brain on all things Ironman. Otherwise in the land of reality: Lance and Chris @ Yeronga keep me motivated to swim faster, Pete Court and Ewan are so solid on the Sunday-session bike that it makes me want to do the goat track over and over, and Matty, Pete, and Nashy @ the track on Tuesday's push me to run faster. So really, life is sweet with the Reddog crew!

June Athlete of the Month 2010 - Clare Hooke

Reddog AOTM, how do you feel about that?

Very surprised, considering how many talented people there are in the squad who are much more deserving of the title than me.

What attracted you to the sport of triathlon?

My flatmate Nicole who used to make me very jealous as to the amount of food she could eat and never put on any weight cause she burnt it all of training

If you were Reddog coach for the week, what would you do differently?

Not much at all, I think Trent is an awesome coach but i would insist on turning up the heaters in the pool

How much training do you do at the moment?

1 week on, 1 week off... Kinda hit and miss with me lately

Least favourite session and why?

Any swim session in winter

If you had one wish, what would it be?

To make it through the swim leg at noosa tri and not get eaten by a bull shark

Favourite motivational quote?

What doesnt kill you only makes you stronger... Any body can go from zero to hero (Trent Patten)

What advice would you give to other Reddogs who would like to be AOTM?

Im really not in a position to give that advice as I dont even know how I managed to win the title myself

What are your goals?

To finish my first olympic distance tri at Noosa

Who would be your ideal training partner?

Anyone who has a fun approach to training and doesnt take competing too seriously
