May Athlete of the Month 2012 - Juan-Carlos Delgado

Reddog AOTM, how do you feel about that?

I am very honoured by this. When I joined Reddog I didn’t think my name could come up here, so I feel really proud and extremely happy. I was even happier when I found out that being AOTM meant that from now on my monthly fees have been fully waived for the rest of the year.

What attracted you to the sport of triathlon?

I played soccer all my life and having had some serious injuries (only happens to potential national players), a great friend had the brilliant idea of convincing me to switch sports, particularly because he knew I was such a “great” swimmer. Since day one, I have been enjoying it immensely.

If you were Reddog coach for the week, what would you do differently?

I would probably open lane 9 in the pool with different flavours (raspberry is my favourite). Also I would make sure that Flouchy finishes his running sessions and Bretto finishes his swimming sessions.

How much training do you do at the moment?

Hmmm, I am big dreamer, so mentally I do like 40 hours a week but really 6-8 sessions a week.

Least favourite session and why?

The ones that I miss.

Favourite motivational quote?

Since I dream so much, whenever I am training or racing, I keep saying to myself “it is here and it is now”

What advice would you give to other Reddogs who would like to be AOTM?

Make sure you are having fun and you are being consistent; and don’t worry, Trent is noticing you, even if he only says to you “hey Juan, your fees are due…”

What are your goals?

Just to keep training consistently and be ready for my first time at Noosa 2012. Long term I would like to do Ironman distances.

Having two nationalities, Colombian and Australian, which country would you represent?

That’s a tough decision, but I’d like to give both a chance, so whoever picks me first.

Who would be your ideal training partner?

That would be my wife but since she doesn’t like swimming or running...then I stick to the Reddogs for their attitude and being fun at training.
